Getting Your Outdoor Living Space Ready for Summer in Bangor

June 03, 20262 min read

Summer is the season for outdoor living — and your deck, railings, and steps may need some attention before the gatherings start. At North Star Property Solutions, we help homeowners across the Bangor region get their outdoor spaces safe and ready. Here's what we see come up most often when summer outdoor spaces finally get some use.

Check Your Deck Before Anyone Stands on It

A deck that looked fine last fall can tell a different story in June. Boards loosen. Fasteners back out. Wood that went through a Maine winter can warp, splinter, or develop soft spots you won't notice until you're standing on one. Walk your deck and press down on boards as you go. If anything flexes more than it should or feels spongy underfoot, don't wait on it. That's a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one.

Railings and Steps Are Where Injuries Happen

Loose railings and wobbly steps are the two most common outdoor hazards we fix this time of year. Give every railing a firm shake. If it moves, the fasteners need to be reset or the post needs attention at the base. Steps are worth checking tread by tread — one board that's let go can cause a fall. These are quick fixes when caught early and expensive problems when someone gets hurt.

Outdoor Fixtures and Hardware

Exterior light fixtures, hose bibs, outlet covers, gate latches, and screen door hardware all take a beating over a Maine winter. June is a good time to walk the perimeter of your property and note what's not working the way it should. A loose outlet cover is a minor irritation. A hose bib that's leaking at the wall needs immediate attention.

Fencing and Gates

Frost heave is hard on fence posts. If you have a wood or vinyl fence, check the posts at ground level — they shift more than people expect after a hard freeze. Gates that dragged all spring usually have a post that's moved. Getting that corrected before summer is a lot easier than fighting a gate every time you go in and out of the yard.

When to Call North Star

Most of these are exactly the kind of jobs we handle every week — not big enough for a contractor, too important to ignore. If your outdoor space has a running list of things that need attention before summer gets here, give us a call. We serve homeowners throughout the Bangor area including Brewer, Orono, Old Town, Hampden, and surrounding communities.
